Pharaoh Gold

Egyptian Lapis was one of ancient Egypt's most sacred colors. Lapis lazuli traveled from Afghanistan to Egypt, valued like gold. Egyptians considered it the "stone of heaven"—they believed the sky was blue because of a massive lapis dome. Pharaoh masks, amulets, and tomb murals extensively used lapis blue. Tutankhamun's mask has lapis inlaid around the eyes. Egyptians ground lapis into eyeshadow—"Mesdematet"—possibly the world's first cosmetics. Cleopatra's blue eyeshadow was reportedly lapis powder.

Egyptian Blue is humanity's first synthetic pigment, born around 2200 BCE. The formula—fusing quartz sand, malachite (copper ore), and calcium carbonate at high temperatures—produces a blue glassy substance. Egyptians used it for murals, sculptures, jewelry, and pottery, representing the Nile, sky, and creator god Amun. Tutankhamun's gold mask has Egyptian Blue stripes. After Rome's fall, the formula was lost for 1,000 years. Miraculously, Egyptian Blue glows under infrared light—now used in forensics and medical imaging.
