Table Mountain Blue

Ubuntu in Zulu means "I am because we are," stressing human connection and community. South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth infused this idea into the Ubuntu open-source OS, choosing a warm orange to evoke Africa's energy and openness.

Table Mountain rises like a flat slab beside the Atlantic, its summit often draped in clouds locals call the "tablecloth." From its base, sky, sea, and mountain merge into layered blues that feel like home.

St. Petersburg Blue comes from the northern capital's unique sky. Every June, "White Nights" bathe the city in 24-hour pale blue. The Winter Palace (Hermitage) blue-white facade embodies this color. Catherine the Great made St. Petersburg the "Venice of the North." Tchaikovsky reportedly drew inspiration for "Swan Lake" from White Nights' blue sky.

Egyptian Lapis was one of ancient Egypt's most sacred colors. Lapis lazuli traveled from Afghanistan to Egypt, valued like gold. Egyptians considered it the "stone of heaven"—they believed the sky was blue because of a massive lapis dome. Pharaoh masks, amulets, and tomb murals extensively used lapis blue. Tutankhamun's mask has lapis inlaid around the eyes. Egyptians ground lapis into eyeshadow—"Mesdematet"—possibly the world's first cosmetics. Cleopatra's blue eyeshadow was reportedly lapis powder.

Portuguese streets are lined with blue-and-white tile panels on church façades and metro stations. Azulejos tell stories of religion, seafaring, and daily life. The blue was introduced by Moors and evolved into a distinctive Portuguese narrative art.

Aegean Blue is Greece's soul color. Santorini's white houses with blue-domed churches look like heaven's silhouette in sunlight. Greeks chose blue doors for two reasons—the "evil eye" belief that blue reflects curses, and the 1967-74 junta's mandate for blue-white uniformity. The Greek flag's nine blue-white stripes represent "Freedom or Death" syllables. Ironically, ancient Greeks considered blue a barbarian color.
