"After rain, the sky clears—make this color for me." This legendary quote from Emperor Huizong describes Ru kiln's Sky Cyan. Using agate in the glaze, Ru ware achieves a jade-like blue that shifts subtly with light. Only ~70 pieces survive, each priceless.

Ru kiln Sky Cyan was created in the late Northern Song Dynasty (c. 1086-1106), ranking first among the Five Great Kilns. Production ceased after the Jin invasion, and the technique was lost.
Sky Cyan glaze is one of Chinese ceramics' greatest technical mysteries. Ru kiln artisans added agate powder to the glaze and fired in a reduction atmosphere around 1200°C. Minute changes in temperature and atmosphere created color variations, making each piece unique.
