Imperial Purple Gold
Purple held special status in Chinese history. The "Purple Star" was the emperor's star, and the "Purple Forbidden City" the imperial palace. Duke Huan of Qi loved purple so much that the entire nation wore it, making purple silk five times more expensive than white.
Origin
Imperial Purple Gold was made by mixing purple dye extracted from gromwell root with gold powder, an extremely complex process.
Symbolism
Imperial Purple Gold symbolizes nobility, auspiciousness, and mystery. "Purple clouds from the east" is the most auspicious omen in Chinese culture.
Historical Origin
Purple use began in the Spring and Autumn period. The Tang Dynasty mandated purple robes for officials of the third rank and above.
